Description

FROM RED SOIL is an interactive installation that reinterprets Chinese folk ritual as a dynamic system of matter, memory, and belief. Centered on the Lion Dance, the work reconstructs ritual as a condition in which life, death, and collective emotion circulate through material forms.

Overview

“A man eats from the soil all his life; the soil eats from him once.”

The project begins from this cyclical relationship between human existence and the land. Red soil, as both origin and destination, becomes the ground upon which life is sustained and eventually reclaimed. Within this system, ritual functions as a mediator. Practices often perceived as excessive, irrational, or grotesque are reframed as vessels of collective emotion—where joy and grief are not separated, but coexist within the same structure.

The Lion Dance emerges as a central figure. It appears in moments of celebration and mourning, collapsing the distinction between blessing and loss. The same gesture carries opposing meanings, revealing a cultural condition in which extremes are unified. Incense ash operates as a material bridge. It is both the residue of prayer for the living and the remains of offerings for the dead. Matter accumulates, disperses, and returns—mirroring the movement of human life across the same ground.

Through generative transformation and real-time interaction, the lion is deconstructed into a fluid, responsive entity. Its form no longer remains fixed, but exists as a shifting structure that reacts to presence.

FROM RED SOIL examines the conditions under which ritual persists, transforms, and gradually disappears.
