Description
ASCENT is a virtual spatial project that examines desire as a recursive system without resolution. Through a vertically structured environment, the work stages an endless movement toward an unreachable endpoint, where progression becomes indistinguishable from repetition.
Overview
Desire often appears as direction—as something that moves us forward, upward, or beyond. It promises an endpoint, a state of arrival where lack is resolved and movement can cease.
ASCENT begins from a different assumption: that desire does not lead outward, but folds back onto itself.
The project constructs a vertical environment populated by figures in continuous ascent. These bodies are suspended in a permanent state of reaching—never arriving, never falling, but held within a system that sustains motion without completion. What appears as progress is, in fact, a stabilized condition.
As the viewer moves through the space, the structure seems to open upward, suggesting the possibility of exit. Yet at the moment of near-arrival, the system intervenes. The viewer is returned to the base, reinserted into the same trajectory once again.
This repetition is not presented as failure, but as the underlying logic of the system itself. Desire does not collapse when unfulfilled; it regenerates, reorganizes, and continues.
Within this loop, movement persists without consequence, and pursuit becomes detached from outcome. The endpoint is never denied—it is simply never reached.
ASCENT holds the viewer inside this condition, where ascent is continuous, but arrival remains structurally impossible.
What, then, is actually being pursued?
